BASALT

The name “basalt” derives from the Ethiopian word “basal” meaning “boiled”. It is the most widespread among all extrusive rocks. By their appearance they are dark (dark grey or black), dense and fine-grained rocks with high solidity.

Basalt is extracted openly in quarries and is used as construction stone, as macadam and stone block in road construction, and as filler for concrete. Basalt columns are used in port facilities. It is often used for external finishing of buildings and as material for open-air sculptures. It is an ecologically clean, non-inflammable, heat-insulating material. Indisputable are the advantages of basalt materials in the production of heat resistant products: they can be used within the temperature range of -269°С to +700°С. They don’t collect radiation and are chemical-resistant.

Quarry: Shaki Community, Syunik Region, Armenia.
