GRANITE
Granite (from Latin granum — grain) — is the most widespread volcanic rock in continental earth crust. It is crystalline coarse-, medium and fine-grained igneous rock. Granite has a complex composition, and is mainly formed of feldspar, mica and quartz. Depending on the proportion of these minerals the stone gets a different color. Most widespread are grey and black granites; however those with pink-reddish, white, yellow and green shades can also be found.
Granite has long been used by mankind as a construction stone due to its homogenous structure, pleasant coloring, great durability and rather simple way of quarrying and processing. About half the amount of extracted granite is used as work stone, i.e. blocks, slabs, flags and various products such as monuments and small architectural forms, while the other half is used crushed and fractured. Granite is easily polished, but its main advantage is its high resistance to external influences. Granite withstands temperatures up to 800°ะก. Among natural minerals it is the third most durable after crystals and quartzites. In addition, granite has low water absorption and high resistance to frost, acids and pollution.
For centuries granite has been used as a construction and finishing material. It is therefore optimal to use in exteriors for facing and paving, as well as creating small architectural forms and sculptures. Granite is also used for interior finishing, especially where esthetics should be combined with high durability.
Application: interior finishing (floor, walls, table tops, stairs, balusters, column bases, decorative fountains and columns)
